Stay toasty warm all winter long with this super-cozy duo!

Rolled-brim or brimless, this quick-knit cabled beanie looks fabulous on babies, kids, and adults. And the matching cowl, knit in the round with a snug or loose option, is the perfect seamless cozy complement.

Worked in the round from the brim up in super bulky yarn, you can make one in the time it takes to binge-watch a couple of episodes of your favourite show—like the source of the design’s inspiration, a hat worn by protagonist Prairie Johnson in the supernatural fantasy series The OA. Cables are charted and written out to make them super easy to follow.

Don't get left out in the cold—whip up this trans-dimensional twisty twosome today!

About Samples

Red Set and Black and White Marled Beanie:

Patons Classic Wool Bulky, a triple-ply super bulky 100% wool yarn with 71 m in 100 grams (or 78 yards in 3.53-ounces) that knits up to 12 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches (or 10 cm) on 8.0 mm (US 11) needles. Discontinued.

  • Colourways: Bright Red and Dark Gray Ragg
  • Hats made in size Large. The larger cowl is pictured.

Suggested substitute:

For substitutes, look for a plied wool yarn with good stitch definition of approximately the same gauge and yardage per weight.

Teal Hat:

Rowan Big Wool, a triple-ply super bulky 100% merino wool yarn with 80 metres in 100 grams (or 87 yards in 3.53-ounces) that knits up to 7.5 to 9 stitches and 10 rows per 4 inches (or 10 cm) on 10.0 to 15.0 mm (US 15 to 18) needles.

This is slightly bulkier than the original gauge, but it’s similar enough and the pattern is forgiving enough that it works fine.

About My Secret Wish Knitting

Hi! I’m Talena Winters (a.k.a. the Yarn Mermaid).

I started My Secret Wish Knitting in 2010 to empower and delight knitting heroes like you who want to elevate your knitting and make magic with yarn. When I’m not concocting new yarn potion recipes, I’m creating story magic as a fantasy and romance author and fiction editor (at talenawinters.com). I live with my family and pets in the Peace Country of northern Alberta, Canada, where sweater weather lasts at least nine months a year and my closest neighbours are bears and wood nymphs.

This website is a labour of love by a team of one (me!). If you found value here, please support the effort by purchasing a pattern. If you want more knitting magic, check out my community events and newsletter in the Knitting Circle. We’d love to have you!
